Top Reason To Choose Cichlids

Cichlids are a top choice for almost everyone. Whether you are a beginner in freshwater aquarium or an experienced breeder, Cichlids are great choice.  The main reason, because they have many varieties, 900+ species.  Several newly discovered species are left without due description! 

Community Tanks, Uniform Pooling

You can create a community tank with mixed species or you can create one that is uniform, consisting of just one species.  Ideally, if you are not prepared to spend alot of money, then you can consider pooling same species.  

Pooling different species of aggressors is interesting (a dog eat dog situation), challenging and expensive.  Go for it if you want, provided you have experience knowing the varied characteristic of different species that get along from those that do not.  If you plan mixing species, be prepared to witness the flare up of gills or enjoy the species kiss mismatch.

Uniform pooling is easy to understand and deal with.  This is because all the fish you have are the same species, they are going to behave more or less the same way.  You will be getting to know your fish psychology better, when you breed the same kind. Knowing them better eases maintenance.

Why You Should Differentiate Fish Based on Eating Habits Herbivore, Predator, Detritivore?

The advantage about Cichlids is that most of the species feed on algae! Even if you mess up a bit with aquarium lighting that can lead to increased growth of algae, you can forget feeding them for a couple days, they will feed on the algae. (You need to follow the cleaning routine though.)  

Some Cichlids are predatory and you want to be sure of the characteristic of your fish before you take advantage of it by getting a bit lazy, leaving your fish unfed, thereby triggering them to feed on algae.  Be sure your species is the herbivore kind of species.

There are detritivores species that feed on both algae and other organic material.  Predators feed on snails and other tiny fishes in the tank.

Before you spot the exact species for uniform pooling, think a bit about your maintenance habits. If you forget to feed or mess up with light timers once in a while, you may want to consider the herbivorous cichlid species.

About Petrochromis Cichlids

Petrochromis Cichlids are herbivore. Petrochromis is a tiny genus consisting of just 7 well defined, and more undefined collection of species.  This species is endemic (common) to Lake Tanganyika in Africa. 

You want to refer to the appearance of the different species of this genus. You also want to know about the life span of the fish, their resistance to fluctuating salinity and other aspects before deciding on the exact species.

I need a catfish that can live with freshwater tropical community fish?

I have pressed glass marble stones on the bottom of my 20 gallon tank. The little fish cant move the rocks, so alot of food gets down there. Id like a catfish of some sort that will be able to get in there to clean that out, but it cant get too big, or go after the mollies and guppies. Any suggestions?

Khuli oaches will have a blast rooting through them (They are extremely good/strong when it comes to rooting in stuff)
