Questions about my used aquarium filter?
I have a used penguin bio wheel 330 filter. I don’t know anything about it. I rinsed the filters and wheels all out with tap water. Should I just buy new filters and/or wheels? How often am I supposed to replace them, if ever? I have heard of people taking the wheels out and not even using them? What is the purpose of these wheels then?
Please help so I can get my tank started. Thanks.
1. Replace the filter, not the wheel. The filter grows good bacteria which helps remove nitrates and amonia from your tank.
2. The wheel will be fine. Biowheels provide large amounts of surface area for nitrifying bacteria to colonize and more effectively oxidize ammonia to nitrite and then nitrate. Biowheels have beneficial bacteria on them, as water flows, it turns the wheel(s), and exposes the bacteria to air, which it needs to filter the water. The wheel is just enhanced bio-filtration, I love the wheel because when you replace other filter media the wheel can just stay there or float in the tank and never has to be replaced(unless it is damaged) so you get to retain the bacteria!
