How can i use solar power to power my aquarium filter(and/or heater)?

???
alright, lets say its just the filter, which uses only 4 watts of electricity. and i live in LA, california, so there’s plenty of sun here to go around….hope the additional info helps

It’s complicated. figure out how much power they use first, and calculate how much that electricity costs from the power company. My guess would be 50 watts or so, which probably costs about $4 per month.

You need 24 hour a day power, so you need a large battery, and a good sized panel to keep the battery charged during the limited hours of sun you get in the winter, which of course depends on where you live.

If you get only 4 hours of sun a day worse case, then you need 24/4 or 6 x 50 watts or 300 watts worth of panel. Add more for losses to get 500 watts. But, there are days when there is no sun, so if you want to cover 1 sunless day, that becomes 1000 watts. That’s 100 square feet of panel, for about $1000. You need batteries to handle 2 days at 50 watts or 2400 watt-hours, which is 2 large lead acid marine bateries, for about $600. then you need charge controller and inverter, another $500.

You can see why solar energy is not very practical yet. $2000 (plus installation costs) divided by $4 means it takes 500 months for payback, or 40 years.

There are some species of coral that can survive with the normal amount of lighting, so for the beginner, you may want to stick to these species. Specifically, Mushroom Coral and Coral Polyps can survive with normal lighting techniques.

Conversely, species such as SPS (Small Polyp Stony Coral) that include Acoropora, Montipora, Porites, Brain Coral, Bubble Coral, Elegance Coral, Cup Coral, Torch Coral, and Trumpet Coral require far greater intensity with lighting, making them a substantially greater challenge for the aquarium hobbyist, especially considering more light usually means more harmful algae will grow in the tank.

The best lighting technique to keep your coral safe is the light emitting diode (LED) technology, which has begun to make the former standards: gas and filament based lighting systems obsolete. Though initially more expensive then gas and filament systems, over time they save money because they use less power and have a longer lifespan, meaning less replacement costs and hassle.

It is important to note that the zooxanthellae’s photosynthesis process require light of two different colors: red and blue, which is why aquarium lights often will exude a purple hue, as most of them provide both colors as an industry standard.

While it is essential to have the minimum amount of light in order to meet the xooxanthellae’s minimum requires for photosynthesis to work, it is also important to note that it has an upper limit tolerance as well. Your lights must therefore be in the middle or bad things will happen to both the zooxanthellae, and as a byproduct, the coral.

While not an exact science as how much or how little light depends on how many xooxanthellae reside in the coral, and that can be anywhere from thousands to millions, but a good place to start would be to ensure that your intensity minimum is 3000-lux and that you don’t go above 120,000-lux. While this may seem to be a quite wide and open range, you will have to make determinations base on the behavior of your coral.

Good quality types of lamps to use would include florescent, and you should use six lamps, or if your aquarium is not wide enough for that, then it is recommended that you instead utilize high output lamps, which are more expensive, but necessary. You should replace these bulbs every six months. Power compact florescent lamps, which are U-shaped, are an even better option, and you will only need four.

Coral is an excellent addition to any aquarium, and there are many fish that enjoy coral as a food source. Regardless if you have added coral to your aquarium to survive or as sustenance for your fish, you have to have the right lighting or it won’t survive.

SaltySupply.com offers the most premium aquarium supplies on the net. We offer protein skimmers, powerheads, pumps and more for your saltwater aquarium.

Converting from freshawater to saltwater aquarium?

I’m converting my 10gal freshwater aquarium to a saltwater fish only. I have a marinelnd powerfilter, thermometer, heater and light (I will change the bulb to 50/50). I know I will be needing new sand (aragonite) and hydrometer.
My question is, do I still need a protein skimmer? powerhead? or my powerfilter will be enough (he powerfilter is for 20gal, so this is kinda strong for 10gal)?

I know a lot of you would say don’t use a 10gal aquarium for saltwater, but this is the only available for me now due to space.

Well, i usually recommend 40 – 50 gallon for a beginner salt tank because of temperature flucuations toxic buildup etc, but i have seen many 20 gallons and Nanocube has a 1 gallon out for salt. I was thinking of getting one myself. (i just don’t want the extra work)
READ everything you can about setting up a marine/reef tank, they require a great deal of attention to DETAIL and constant monitoring and the organisms that go in there can be very expensive and delicate.
If you are very, very, very diligent, you should have no problems.
you may want to start out with just the tank without the sand but you will still need the skimmer, your power filter should be okay, you can always block part of the intake to lessen the amount of water being pumped into the filter. just attach a hose to the intake that is smaller than the opening. or place a rock in front of the exaust. Good luck, and don’t cry when the tank takes a dump and everything dies.
