Bone Chew
1. Chocolate and other cocoa- or caffeine-containing substances. Dogs love such things but should never be fed them. Dark chocolate is the worst for dogs, but any chocolate can cause seizures, vomiting, and even death. Don’t feed your dog chocolate and don’t leave chocolate candies or candy bars anywhere a dog might reach them. Theobromine is the compound found in chocolate which is bad for dogs, and foods with the greatest concentration of theobromine are baking chocolate, cocoa powder, and dark chocolate. Soda, tea, cocoa, coffee and other drinks with caffeine or chocolate should also never be shared with your dog.
2. Grapes and raisins. These are very toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure. It’s unlikely that a dog would seek out grapes to eat, but it’s possible one would try to eat something like oatmeal raisin cookies or other foods containing raisins, so be careful not to give your dog these foods.
3. Raw eggs, fish and meat. As with humans, raw eggs and meat can make a dog sick if salmonella or e. coli is present in the food. It is best to only feed your dog well-cooked meats. Fish can contain parasites if not properly cooked, and some kinds of fish have high mercury levels which can be poisonous.
4. Raw bones. If you are supervising the dog, it may be okay to give him a large bone to chew on, but if it begins to get cracked it should be taken away. The pieces of bone can splinter and cause choking, or it can get lodged in the throat or damage the internal organs if swallowed. If a dog is given table scraps of something like chicken, it is important to check it first to make sure there are no small bones in it.
5. Onions can be harmful to dogs by causing red blood cell damage. Garlic is less dangerous, but should probably still be avoided.
6. Milk and related foods. Some dogs really seem to like things like cheese and ice cream, but dogs have more trouble digesting these foods than humans due to having less lactase in their bodies. This could cause stomach upset and these foods should probably be avoided.
7. Alcohol. It is cruel to attempt to get your dog drunk. Notice the presence of the word “toxic” in “intoxication.” Do to a dog’s size and dogs having less ability to break down alcohol, it could be very dangerous to try to get it to ingest alcohol.
