Is there a way to keep a cat off furniture?

We recently bought new furniture, and had to move back into our old house.
My brother had stayed there and bought a cat.
Now the cat won’t get off the couch and I’m afraid it’ll claw and ruin it.

There are a couple of approaches that use alarms, and I have posted a link to several. The Scram mat is particularly effective.

If your cat is scratching your furniture, and you’re looking for a solution, this article will give you some hot ideas.

Orange peels or lemon peels under the area or near the area they scratch most, will discourage them from visiting the area. Most cats are not fond of citrus smells. Additionally, you can spray lemon or orange scents on the affected areas.

There are special covers for furniture corners, which can be removed when guests come over. The little plastic surfaces completely cover the corners of sofas or chairs discouraging the cat from using their claws there.

A squirt gun filled with water is harmless but works wonders on a cat misbehaving. Keep a bottle nearby and be sure to spray the cat while they are in the act of scratching your furniture. Cats will not understand any scolding done before and after.

Scary sounds work very well on cats. Simply stomping your foot or making a hissing sound while they are scratching the surfaces will suffice. Cats do not understand screaming or yelling, except in fear, and will not respond with better behavior and may, instead, become frightened of you, instead of scratching.

There are covers you can buy to use on your cat’s claws. These little plastic covers are inexpensive and fit directly over the nail.

Buying the proper cat scratcher will make a huge difference. Cats are like people, they have their favorite toys and furniture. What one cat likes, another may not like. If you do not find a scratcher that your cat uses the first time, try again with a different type or brand.

You can make a scratcher quite easily using a square piece of wood, and a quartered firewood piece. Cats generally love wood and carpet. Fit the bottom of the scratcher with carpet and spray it with catnip. If your cat continues to scratch the furniture, when caught in the act place them directly in front of the new scratcher.

Cat scratchers are very cheap, between twelve and fifteen dollars. If you buy one which your cat dislikes, you can give it away and try a different type or exchange it with another cat owner who is dissatisfied with their scratcher.

Most importantly, do not declaw your cat, as you will leave it defenseless and helpless. Declawing a cat is akin to chopping off the top joint of a person’s finger. There are plenty of other cheap options, including keeping your cat’s nails short.

Looking mainly for a great cat tree, cat condo, or cat gym that’s around 5 feet high.

Drsfosterandsmith.com. They are still expensive (all cat trees are) but a whole lot cheaper than the competitors. They also offer a lot more different selections. Or, for even cheaper, I bought a cat tree that goes to the ceiling for 35 dollars at Wal-mart. It’s nothing special though.
