Help with bubble counter/CO2 diffuser?

I have a 29 gallon planted tank with a canister CO2 system(not DIY or pressurized). I bought it from Petsmart. What would be a good bubble count or amount of CO2 in the tank? How do you test the CO2? I get 1 bubble like every 6 seconds, is that too few? How can I improve the system? sorry for all the questions and thanks for any advice

I’ve only used a DIY system, but it should emit roughly the same ratio of CO2.

I used one bubble every 2 seconds, and I ran the tubing through the intake of the power filter. (When the bubble reaches the blades of the filter, it gets split into several tiny bubbles, making it easier to diffuse CO2 into the tank.) However, this turned out to be too much, and my pH dropped to almost 6. I’m sure my plants loved it, but my Tanganyika cichlids did not. Although I was using a 10 gallon, not a 29, so saturation may differ.

Another possible way to improve diffusion is by making a “bell” attached to a suction cup on your tank. Run the tubing under the bell. You can use any upside-down transparent cup for this. In theory, this should prevent the loss of CO2 into the atmosphere from your canister. The bubbles will collect in the bell and slowly diffuse into the water when possible. I have never tried this; but others have, with mixed results. My guess; the rate of diffusion would mainly depend on the diameter of your “bell”.

Really the only way to find out what works for your tank is trial and error. I would run a pH test and a KH (carbonate hardness) test, and look on the graph to see your dissolved CO2 content. It should have came with your test kit, but here’s a link; http://theaquariumwiki.com/CO2_testing

I would test every two days, increasing or decreasing the rate as needed.

*Remember there are several other things that can affect CO2 concentration, temperature being a major one. Keep surface agitation to a minimum (no air stones, those are just for show anyways)

Protein skimmers, also known as foam fractionators, are very effective, highly recommended filters for any central water system. I was amazed the first time I saw the waste in the collection cup of a protein skimmer -a rich, thick, dark brown goop extracted from the seemingly clear aquarium water. No filter pad on the market removes junk like that. Protein skimming is a natural occurrence that anyone who has ever strolled a beach on a windy day or walked along a rocky shoreline has observed. The brown foam that swirls around in small eddies is a result of protein skimming on a large scale. A well-designed protein skimmer is worth its weight in gold but be sure to choose a reliable model rated for the amount of water in your system.

There are many types of protein skimmers available to marine aquarists: co-current, counter current, venturi, down-draft, and many more added each year. Counter-current, venturi and down draft models are superior to co-current models.

A counter-current protein skimmer pumps water into the top of a contact chamber through a reaction chamber and exits at the bottom. Fine bubbles, created with a wooden air diffuser, rise from the bottom of the contact chamber. The bubbles traveling up and the water traveling down cause the water to swirl violently in the chamber. Organic molecules, amino acids, fatty acids and a variety of other pollutants adhere to the surface of the tiny bubbles and congregate at the top of the contact chamber forming a stable layer of foam. When this layer of foam grows large enough, it pushes its way up a riser tube, where it eventually falls out into a collection cup. Here, the foam dissipates and anything that was adhering to the surface falls off. The longer the contact time between the water and the bubbles the more waste will be created.

Venturi protein skimmers are operated with one inlet. A water pump is fitted with a venturi valve that feeds air into the rushing water. A mass of tiny bubbles is constantly fed into the reaction chamber. Properly designed venturi protein skimmers are an ideal choice for central systems. They are often built wider rather than higher, conserving space. The venturi valve rarely needs maintenance compared to the monthly replacement of wooden air diffusers in counter-current models and they allow a better turnover rate.

DIY Homemade Co2 Diffuser Query?

I’ve seen lots of tutorials on youtube on how to make a homemade Co2 diffuser for your aquarium. The only problem is that they don’t mention any measurements when adding the yeast and water etc…
For this reason i don’t want to make one in case it does damage to my tank via overdose. So, my tank is around 65 liters and i’m going to put some shrimp in there. I’m wondering whether it’s a good or bad idea to make my own Co2 diffuser and if i can make one safely then what measurements should i use? How long should i leave the diffuser on for?

well, assuming you are using a 2 L or close to that size bottle, i like to use
4 cups sugar
1/4-1/2 teaspoon of yeast

this reaction will keep going for over a month if you do it right, and it will produce just a little co2. a chain of tiny bubbles is about as much as it will produce. so it won’t poision your tank, but it will provide enough co2 for your plants. place the airstone of the co2 reactor under neath the filter in your tank so the bubbles get spewed out into the water as they rise to the surface. or you can put the airston next to the filter intake so the bubbles get sucked up and dissolve in the water. if you need more co2 you may need to use more yeast, but your reaction will not last as long, only about 2 weeks. my reaction does not produce a lot of co2, i wouldn’t use it for anything bigger than a 10 gallon. i leave my reactor going all the time because it produces such little co2 that i am not worried about an overdose.
