What kind of dog collar should I get for my puppy?
I have a one month old black lab puppy and I’m shopping for a collar. What kind should I get? He’s very active, should I get a leather one so it doesn’t break?
Congratulations on your pup! My cousin’s family always had black labs and when we visited we would go down to the bay and play with them for hours. They especially loved the water. They could fetch in the water and even under the water!
I assume your pup’s mom is still in the picture, your pup is pretty young for a collar. Perhaps at 7 or 8 weeks old you should start looking for a synthetic collar. Although I love leather collars, they usually aren’t the best choice for a pup. Leather collars usually have a buckle and only adjust within a small percentage of the collar’s length so you’ll be buying another one soon. Also with only 3 or 4 holes you may not be able to get the perfect fit for a growing pup.
My recommendation it to get a light-weight nylon or polyester collar that is very flexible for your pup.
A synthetic collar usually has an adjustable buckle that slides along the collar so you can fit it perfectly and you should be able to get one with a fairly long bit of collar past the buckle for growth, so it will last a little longer as you pup grows.
If your pup likes the water, a synthetic collar is also waterproof, so it is easier to clean and resists mildew.
