How often are you supposed to bath a dog/puppy?
We recently got a Newfoundland/Bernese Mountain Dog puppy and I’ve been giving her a bath once a week because she loves to tromp around with our two boys and tends to get really dirty. But, my husband heard that you aren’t supposed to bath a dog too often because it dries out their skin. So, my question is: How often is not too often?
Weekly bathing is not a problem as long as you are using an appropriate shampoo for dogs. If you dog does not having any types of skin issues, I wouldn’t worry. Make sure that you are drying the coat thoroughly after bathing so that the skin does not suffer, and if possible, use a moisturizing shampoo.
If you notice flakes of dandruff & they are dry & tend to fall right off, then you are drying out the skin. If the flakes appear greasy & thick, she may have oily skin, or may be producing extra oil to compensate for the bathing.
In most cases, weekly bathing is not going to be a problem, but as a compromise, you can give her a ‘dry bath’. There are many products available for this, it involves cleaning solution that is rubbed into the coat, but doesn’t require water or rinsing.
Also, I have found for my dogs that a pet wipe works well between bathing. They are made especially for dogs & contain lanolin to help protect the coat, & have no alcohol (do not use baby wipes, which have alcohol & would dry out the coat & skin).
