I have several small dogs and am looking at introducing a large dog puppy into the pack. Introduction tips pls?
I have a Chihuahua, pugalier and King Charles cavalier and am introducing a Bernesse Mountain dog puppy. Useful tips for introducing the new puppy.
I have always owned multiple dogs, and I usually stagger their ages so I’ve had to introduce puppies into the pack before. Cedar Milan has some books that address this if you want to read what a pro has to say about it – and I think you should.
However, from my experience, here’s what I think – 1.) You CAN introduce a large breed dog into the group despite what others on here are saying. 2.) The puppy will want to ‘play’ with the other dogs and the other dogs might not want to ‘play’ – so their could be some hurt feelings. 3.) Separate the puppy at feeding time – put him in another room, outside, etc. – somewhere because food issues can be a huge problem.
Your biggest concern will be the rough-house playing from the larger breed puppy. Keep an eye on it, don’t let it get out of hand, and don’t leave the puppy alone with the other dogs. You will have to crate train the big guy for a while until they are a pack (maybe a year or two).
When I got my most recent puppy (10+ years ago), my old dog played with him occasionally. After 10-15 minutes of playing, the old dog would pin the puppy by the throat until the puppy would submit. That’s how dogs communicate. Your problem will be that the older smaller dogs won’t be able to pin the larger puppy in order to get him to stop. YOU will have to stop the playing at the appropriate time. But since you have 3 other dogs, I’m sure you will be able to read the signs. Good luck.
