That’s why careful selection of a koi pond kit is essential – in order to plan for and fulfill all of these requirements and get everything just right… rather than looking back with regret once you have built it.
So here are the most necessary components to look for when evaluating koi pond kits, especially if you are thinking about building it yourself.
The first point to make is that nothing beats local knowledge and experience and regardless of how much learning you have done about the subject of koi ponds, if this is your first time building one, then it will hold you in very good stead to seek out some local advice – either from koi enthusiasts in your area and/or your local koi pond supplier.

- Pond liner and an under liner
- A good water pump and water volume calculations. You might also want to consider a battery backup system in case of power failure, variable frequency drive controllers and a voltage doubler depending on the power source you end up using
- A good filtration system and water flow meter
- PVC pipe, fittings, jointers, tees, valves, solvent cement and flexible pipe
- Pond thermometer
- A pond skimmer, vacuum system, extensions and attachments
- Ultraviolet lighting
- Chemicals treatments for alkaline, pH buffer, saline, dechlorination, fungicides, parasiticides, nitrification bacteria
- Water toxicity testing kits for chlorine, oxygen, ammonia, nitrites, pH, calcium and magnesium hardness, carbonate hardness, salt levels, copper
Don’t be overwhelmed by some of the technical terms above or the thought of what this all might cost – a good supplier will guide you with what is most essential to get started with and from there you can buy as necessary. Having said that… most koi pond kits of any real value will contain these things anyway – maybe even more.
As time goes by you will become a lot more practiced at testing the pond water and applying the required treatment… so it will be a “learn as you go” experience.
For now… just take the time to talk with experienced local koi keepers and learn some good info that will help you even more to decide on the koi pond kit that is just right for you.

What color to paint my Japanese Koi Pond?
Hi, I have a pond the size of a small swimming pool and would like to start getting Japanese Koi there soon. I need to put pond sealer paint and not sure what color to choose.
Which color is best for a pond with Japanese Koi and why?
i would use black as it will hide any dirt that collects on the bottom and will make the full colour of the fish stand out against the dark back ground
