Will turning off a water softener do any damage to the the system or pipes?

We are moving into a mobile home with a water softening system, but do not want to use it. Will turning off and cleaning out the system hurt it? We plan to be there a few years and want to make sure it still works when we move out. Any website references would be helpful, as I couldn’t find any. Thank you.

nope, but i would recommend hitting the “bypass” valve if it has one. this way there’s no water going through the softener itself, it just goes straight from the water inlet to the outlet. It is located where the inlet and outlet pipes enter the softener. Otherwise you are still filtering the water through the “resin” inside the softener and the minerals will continue building up on it since it isn’t running through it’s cleaning cycles after it’s turned off.
