There are things to look for like color, output power, laser design, battery life, expected diode life time, filters used, type of crystals, and other pieces of information that doesn’t really mean too much to anyone but a physics engineer.
So what is the best way for an average person to hop online, find a laser they like, determine its quality and make a purchase if it meets all the standards the individual has set themselves. Here is a quick look at how to avoid buying something cheap and shoddy while at the same time learning how to find the best deal for the highest quality laser pointers out there.
A good place to start your search begins on the search engine, preferably Google. Because “lasers” can be a very broad topic, you will want to search a bit more specifically. Maybe list the color of laser you are looking for or the strength or the manufacturer, really anything that will narrow down your search. Maybe something like “buy cheap lasers” and see what type of results pop up at you.
Take a look at the first few natural results, not the paid advertising search results, and see what is there. Browse through the sites who will most likely be selling lasers and see what type of models catch your eye, if any. Take note of the name of the model and head back to the search engine to learn more about the laser in question.
Now you will want to search for that model online and see what other websites are offering it as well so that you can compare prices and find the lowest one. You may also consider hunting for a review or blog on the laser model which you can usually find on certain tech websites. If you can find nothing in forums or elsewhere, it may be a questionable laser model and should be looked at a bit more closely.
Its also a good idea to see what type of manufacturer is producing the lasers and the materials used.
