Correct Metal Halide Bulb for lamp?
Hi, I have a lamp with a light intensity regulator going from 80-500w working with metal halide bulbs. I bought a 350watt bulb and tried it with this lamp, I didn’t put the intensity too high up afraid of frying it.
But my neighbor has this a lamp with a regulator which indicates min50w Max 400w he put a 200watt metal halide in it and it works fine. I want to know if the bulb capacity is too small for my lamp since it indicates 80-500W which means I can’t light it to the max since the regulator intensity is from 80-500 in risk of frying it?
No worries.
You are mixing apples (watts) with oranges (voltage). Your intensity regulator affects the voltage to the lamp (correct term for ‘bulb’ – as ‘fixture’ is the correct term for ‘lamp’), and the size (wattage) of the lamp itself affects the total number of watts it will draw.
Your fixture will accept a lamp *up to* 500 watts. But anything smaller will do just fine as well and dim proportionately to the actual voltage supplied.
