When to change the filter media and how?
I have a 30 gal tank, newly cycled, I have two running filters on it. When should I do my first cartridge change? I assume I should change only one first. How long should I wait to change out the second?. My tank has recently cycled and is now running smooth so I am a little wary and want to do this correctly. Thanks for your help!
It really depends what sort of filter you are running.
If you are running power filters with sponges only then basically only when the sponges are falling apart (which should be years from now), you will need to rinse them out every couple of weeks in water removed from the aquarium but that is.
If you are running filters that have carbon and sponge insert then every couple of months as the carbon will only absorb so much before it releases the impurities back into your tank (you can normally tell this is happening because the water will have a yellow tint to it).
If you are running sponge and carbon, only replace the carbon every couple of months but the sponges will be fine.
