Guinea pigs are some of the most fun, friendly and personable pet any owner can hope for. Just because they are considered rodents doesn’t mean they act like mice. In fact, most of them love interaction and petting. They are very much into companionship like dogs also.
Before anyone gets a new guinea pig, there are a few things to be aware of in order to keep the pet healthy and happy. Care for them is not more complicated than other pets, just a little different.
Your new pet will need a large cage to hang out in, and while most of them will be indoor pets, they need their own place where they can stretch out and exercise in.
Some cages come with accessories and toys that many owners think will be fun for the guinea pig. This can be the furthest thing from the truth. Many of them receive injuries to their spine and feet from getting caught and trapped by these toys. Don’t risk the health and life of your pet and make sure there is nothing in the cage that can hurt it.
The only thing that should always be in the cage is some hay. Guinea pigs need hay in order to thrive and keep their overall health balanced. Keep in mind that not all guinea pigs need the same kind of hay.
Pregnant guineas, and their young when they are born will need a variety called Alfalfa hay. However, if they are not pregnant, then the preferred variety is called Timothy hay.
They love to eat fruits and vegetables, but they can also dine on store bought food. Just don’t over do it and remember balance and variety. This will ensure the pet eats healthy and will benefit from a higher degree of overall well being.
These are the basic rules to having a guinea pig as a pet. Taking these steps to keep them healthy and happy will make for a long lasting pet that will bring so much joy to the home.

I have 2 guinea pigs and I want to buy bulk timothy hay (2nd cut) from a farm. I live in Montgomery County, PA and don’t want to travel too far. I am looking at getting around 20-30 pounds at a time, maybe more. Thanks!
Go to ant Feed and see Store, you will find them listed in your phone book. You usually will have to drive some distance, however it is so worth it, as every thing you need you can get there so much cheaper in bulk. You should call ahead to make sure this one has it in as not all Feed and seed stores will carry guinea pig products.
