Basking Spot
For aquatic turtles, should the heat lamp and the uva/uvb tube light be over the basking spot?
Or should the uva/uvb tube light be over the water? and the heat lamp over the basking platform.
The heat lamp definetly needs to be over the basking area – gotta keep that spot warm so your turt is motivated to leave the water to bask and so when it does it can thermoregulate efficiently.
Ideally UVB would be provided over both the basking and water area.
If you have a compact UVB tube and it cannot go over the entire tank then the basking area would do the most good. The amount of UVB provided by anything but a mecury vapor bulb is minimal enough that the water pretty much dissapates it to nil when the turtle is submerged. The flip side is that the heat in the basking lamp causes the UVB tube to degrade more quickly. As long as you replace UVB lighting evry 4-6 months you should be fine.
This info relates to heavy baskers, sliders, cooters and the like. Boggy species and bottom walkers have some different recommendations.
